报告内容简介:
Native forests comprise the largest part of NZ’s forest estate. While they are managed primarily now for conservation purposes, this was not the case for early European settlers. The clearing of native forests for timber and agriculture was extensive devastating. This conflicted with Māori values toward forests (ngahere) and trees. Very high cultural values are attached to Māori to native forests and the goal is to transform exotic pine forests back to native over time. The interest in native trees for their environmental values, higher timber prices and carbon sequestration has led to more projects to utilise native trees. However, their slow initial growth, long rotation cycles and high establishment costs remain a significant barrier.
